Living Rent is Scotland’s tenants’ union.
We are a democratic organisation run by and for tenants. We want homes for people, not for profit; to redress the power imbalance between landlords and tenants; and ensure that everyone has decent and affordable housing.
We believe in the collective power of tenants to come together to fight for their rights, and use diverse tactics – including direct action when necessary – to achieve this. We are not affiliated to any political party, but recognise the importance of influencing parties and politicians and holding them to account.
Living Rent is looking for a member defence coordinator for the East Coast of Scotland to support our organisation’s growth. This position will join and support a growing team of organisers in Scotland, as well as expanding member defence teams across Scotland.
About the job:
You will work closely with Living Rent’s members in Edinburgh and neighbouring regions, with the LR team in Scotland and with ACORN team throughout the UK and will focus specifically on supporting members to address their housing issues through member defence. The role will entail supporting the growth of Living Rent’s member defence teams, recruiting new members, working with members to develop branch-based member defence teams, coordinating training for members, supporting members to plan and deliver member defence campaigns and actions, and delivering administrative duties such as email sign-posting, website updates, measuring and reporting Living Rent’s impact. You will be working with existing and newly recruited members.
Qualifications:
We are recruiting a versatile coordinator. We are looking for someone keen to work with a young organisation and passionate about member-run and diverse organisations. Experience in case-work, training, community education, customer facing work, management, workplace organising, recruitment, campaigning and administration are welcome though not mandatory. We are primarily looking for someone to show enthusiasm, curiosity, willingness to learn and a commitment to social justice. This role may suit someone who wishes to move into a role which empowers members to plan direct actions and strengthens Living Rent as a member-led union. Housing insecurity is a stressful thing to live with, you must be willing to work with people experiencing this stress and be able to be sensitive in supporting them, yet still able to champion our fighting approach.
We are very excited to continue growing our organisation and hope this job is for YOU!
Living Rent is looking for one community organiser to join our organisation in Glasgow and fight for social and economic change. You will work closely with Living Rent’s members in Glasgow, joining a growing team of Living Rent organisers in Scotland.
About the job:
Your job is to build tenant power in order to challenge landlords collectively, not only bringing victories to members but also building a system that puts people before profit. The role will entail organising outreach events (door-knocking in blocks of flats, street stalls, community meetings), recruiting members, supporting the creation of neighbourhood organising teams, supporting members to organise direct actions and organising local events. This role aims to get more people involved in Living Rent at the local and national level, in order to build tenants’ power in Scotland. This job will take place through neighbourhood-based work though, if the situation changes, the role will switch to online organising.
Qualifications:
We are looking for someone keen to work with a young organisation and passionate about member-run and diverse organisations and determined to build working-class power. Experience in recruitment, training delivery, community education or campaigns is welcome; however enthusiasm, willingness to learn and commitment to social justice are more important than previous experience as training will be provided. This role may suit someone with experience in sales, street fundraising or other customer facing work, and wishes to move into organising.
