At CSREC, we aim to reduce the negative effects of inequality and marginalisation experienced by Minority Ethnic individuals, asylum seekers, and refugees across Central Scotland, enabling them to engage with the wider public to enhance community cohesion and prevent discrimination.

Aims of the Post:

To deliver the key Scottish Government outcomes for the Equality & Human Rights Fund. The agreed outcomes are:

a) People have greater awareness and understanding of their human rights, and how to access them.

b) People with protected characteristics have increased access to remedies where their rights have not been upheld.

c) People with protected characteristics have increased participation in public life.

d) Public services increasingly embed equality and human rights in their strategic planning and their day-to-day functions.

Background

CSREC was established in 1984 to eradicate all forms of discrimination under the Race Relations Act 1976. Based in Falkirk, we work across Central Scotland including Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, and Stirling Council areas.

Every project that we run, and every action that CSREC takes, works towards enabling people from ethnic minorities to be aware of their rights, understand what they can do to enable them, and what to do if such rights are not being upheld.

Where people experience barriers to exercising their rights, we work with them to overcome those barriers, help them to empower themselves, and build resilience.

Our work also addresses the needs of people facing structural racism and inequality through partnership work, awareness-raising, training, and consultancy at the organisational level with public, private, and third sectors.

The Role

We are currently recruiting a Project Assistant to support the planning, delivery, and evaluation of our ethnic minority employability project.

This short contract offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in project administration, marketing, and evaluation support within a small but dynamic human rights charity.

The Project Assistant will work closely with the rest of the CSREC team and partners with a unique opportunity to help run a range of exciting and evolving employability projects.

This role will involve:

Project Administration

  • Assist in project planning, coordination, and execution.
  • Maintain project documentation, schedules, and budgets.
  • Help coordinate project communications, including emails and meetings.
  • Collaborate with partner charities to ensure projects are on track.

Engagement and marketing support

  • Contribute to the development of marketing materials and content.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of marketing campaigns.
  • Engage with our audience on social media platforms and respond to enquiries.
  • Monitor and support the analysis of marketing performance to inform improvement.

Evaluation support

  • Support data collection and analysis for project evaluations.
  • Assist in creating and distributing surveys or questionnaires.
  • Help compile and organise data for reporting and analysis.
  • Participate in review and learning sessions to identify areas for improvement based on evaluation findings.

What skills and experience should you have?

Essential skills and experience:

  • Educated to HND/degree in a relevant subject.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Confident using a range of digital tools to communicate and manage projects.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A genuine interest in CSREC’s mission and values.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Project management skills.

CSREC is a charity dedicated to promoting Human Rights & Race Equality in Central Scotland. We thrive thanks to our dedicated staff and our volunteers and are now expanding our Board of Directors. We are recruiting for additional positions to help with governance and management of the organisation, including the advancement of its strategic direction and work.

CSREC wishes to attract committed and suitably qualified individuals from different communities onto its Board. They must demonstrate good knowledge of issues affecting people from ethnic minority communities and be keen to work with others to address these.

Time Commitment

The Board currently meets once per month in the evening via a blend of in-person and Zoom meetings for approximately 2 hours. Outside of Board meetings there may be additional tasks, such as document writing, subcommittee duties, attending events and supporting staff.

About CSREC

The Central Scotland Regional Equality Council is a registered Scottish charity and a company limited by guarantee that was established in 1984 to eradicate all forms of discrimination under the Race Relations Act 1976. CSREC is based in Falkirk and works across the local authority areas of Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, and Stirling.

The objects of the CSREC are:

  • to work towards the elimination of racial discrimination in all of its forms in the Forth Valley;
  • to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between people of all communities living and working in the Forth Valley;
  • to promote a culture of human rights;
  • to foster good relations amongst ethnic minority and other communities;
  • to promote co-operation in the achievement of the aforesaid purposes and to that end bring together the CSREC representatives of the statutory authorities, and other relevant agencies in the Forth Valley area.

The Role

We are looking for exceptional individuals to join our Board of Trustees at CSREC. We are looking for people with backgrounds in:

  • Equalities and Human Rights, particular candidates who have been involved in work with ethnic minority communities
  • Financial planning and management
  • Business / entrepreneurship
  • Health and safety / human resources

The successful candidates would join, and potentially Chair, our Board. We are seeking individuals not only with the relevant abovementioned knowledge and experience, but also with strong interpersonal skills, an adaptive approach, and a strategic mindset.

Trustees – or non-executive directors – are both charity trustees and company directors of CSREC. The Board of trustees manages the business of the organisation and may exercise all their powers. The trustees ensure compliance with CSREC’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Trustees are responsible for:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the welfare and success of the organisation, its staff and volunteers;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

CSREC is looking to evolve and grow in order to serve more disadvantaged people in the Forth Valley. To realise these ambitions, the Board is seeking new members who will play a pivotal role in driving the organisation forward. In particular, we are interested in recruiting individuals with knowledge in the following areas:

  • Change management
  • Fundraising
  • Financial management
  • Strategic development

Our Board meets up to 12 times per year which includes the AGM. In addition, the Board operates four sub-committees and working groups:

  • Finance and General-Purpose Subcommittee
  • HR Subcommittee
  • Strategy Working Group
  • Policy Working Group

We are keen to recruit from the local community in the Forth Valley but welcome those from further afield who possess the skills and knowledge needed to make a meaningful contribution to our Board.

Expectations of trustees

It is important that trustees fully understand what is expected of them in their role. This includes:

  • Attendance at full Board meetings usually held on Zoom between 5:30 – 7 pm
  • Membership of a sub-committee and attendance at related meetings
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality and conduct in line with the organisation’s vision and values;
  • Participation in relevant training, in addition to Board meetings;
  • Participation in the Board’s skills audit and external reviews of governance;
  • Undertake a Basic Disclosure check and provide two satisfactory references.

Central Scotland Regional Equality Council (CSREC) was set up in 1984. It is a voluntary sector organisation, registered as a charity and a company limited by guarantee consisting of individual members and representatives from a wide range of organisations. CSREC has a remit to work across the areas of Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling Councils. It was set up to eradicate all forms of discrimination under the Race Relations Act 1976. Following the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 and in recognition of intersectionality, we widened our remit to work with all nine protected characteristics. The main aims of CSREC are:

This job description and person specification acts as a guide to the various responsibilities in relation to the position of Mental Health Matters Project Coordinator which is funded by the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER). Due to the on-going changes within the Third Sector these responsibilities may be occasionally amended in negotiation with the position holder. To assist in delivering the key outcomes of the One Planet Forth Valley project as agreed with the Climate Challenge Fund.

The key objectives of the project are detailed below:

  1. Cut CO2 emissions (CO2e) by 20 tonnes by supporting marginalised communities and individuals from ethnic minority communities, LGBTI+ communities, people with disabilities, refugees and survivors of gender-based violence across the Forth Valley to learn new skills and encouraging reduced carbon behaviour via upcycling workshops, swap shops, Carbon Conversations, an online hub and community fridge
  2. Target communities are better engaged in the issue of climate change through increased understanding and awareness
  3. Individuals from target communities have used their new skills to alter their behaviour and are taking steps to reduce their carbon emissions.
