Penumbra is one of Scotland’s largest mental health charities, supporting around 1600 adults and young people every week and employing 400 staff across Scotland. Founded in 1985, we work to promote mental health and wellbeing for all, prevent mental ill health for people who are ‘at risk’ and to support people with mental health problems. We provide a wide range of services which offer hope and practical steps towards recovery and we campaign to increase public knowledge about mental health and to influence national and local government policy.

HR Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic and agile people team, working proactively to provide comprehensive HR support across the organisation. A key part of this role is to assist in the development and implementation of HR procedures and initiatives and to ensure these are imbedded across the organisation. In this role you will deliver first line HR advice and guidance to managers and will also use verbal and written communication skills to liaise with external stakeholders including SSSC and Disclosure Scotland.

Recovery Workers

Two roles available: 1 based at the Alcohol related brain damage service & 1 based at the Carntyne supported accommodation.

Recovery Workers work in small collaborative teams to provide people with recovery focused support to enhance their mental wellbeing. In line with Penumbra’s values, Recovery Workers assist people who use the service to work towards their individual outcomes and identified goals, as detailed in their personal plan.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist people who use the service to work toward their identified goals, and move towards a brighter future as per the agreed personal plan
  • Use Penumbra’s Recovery tools (e.g. I.ROC, HOPE toolkit)
  • Assist with personal care when required.
  • Update and maintain relevant recording systems, including computer based systems.
  • Work collaboratively within Recovery Teams, led by a Recovery Worker.
  • Meet regularly with their recovery Teams to review progress, approach concerns and plans for moving forward
  • Assist in the delivery of wellbeing workshops.
  • Assist in project work as required.
  • Work in cooperation with colleagues, and staff from other agencies.
  • Work in accordance to Penumbra’s policies and procedures.
  • Work in accordance to the SSSC Code of Practice.
  • Keep up to date with sector and organisational developments.
  • Register with the SSSC if appropriate (Practitioner if working in a Care Home, Worker if in Housing Support)

Business Support Assistant

To provide a comprehensive business and administrative support service that meets Penumbra’s objectives across the East area.


  • Work in collaboration with the Area Manager, providing support as required.
  • Provide IT expertise as required across the area and take a lead role in the implementation of any new organisational and local systems.
  • Assist in the development of consistent and effective administrative processes across the organisation.
  • Working closely with several local and national posts and in a close partnership with the other business support and administration teams across Penumbra. Share best practice across the organisation.
  • Work to identify cost and time efficiencies across the area.
  • Work with local management and services to develop and implement appropriate administrative and IT processes.
  • Attend local area management meetings.
  • Line management and supervision of Area Administrator.
  • Undertake project work as required.
  • Understand the requirements of regulatory bodies (SSSC, Care Inspectorate) and work to ensure Penumbra remains compliant.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Health & Social Care partners and other agencies.
  • Take overall responsibility for all local administration processes, in relation to areas such as:
    • Finance
    • Recruitment and Staffing
    • Health and Safety
    • Training
    • Fundraising
    • Contract monitoring
    • Tender Submissions
  • Ensure adequate stock of organisational resources and promotional materials
  • Ensure local information is maintained through Penumbra website and other media
  • Provide regular feed to Penumbra’s social media outlets
  • Co-ordinate local events as required.
  • Provide telephone and reception cover as required.
  • Any other duties as required.
