Project Development Worker (Project Return)

Project Return has been developed to provide a voice to care experienced young people, including those who have been involved in the justice system, to help create an in-depth understanding of the effects of trauma and how healthy, long-term relationships can help a young person move on.

Thanks to funding awarded by Life Changes Trust, we are recruiting a Development Worker to work with young people with lived experience, supporting them to take part in a steering group with the aim of co-producing a toolkit of resources to aid understanding of trauma and healing.

The successful candidate:

You will have experience of working with and supporting vulnerable young people and will be able to ensure that weight is given to their voice and opinions. You will have an understanding of the complexities of trauma and adversity and their impact and recovery. You will demonstrate an ability to work with wide range of stakeholders and audiences, including young people, frontline practitioners and senior managers, and be able to communicate with them using a variety of methods. You will have experience in the evaluation process. You will be well organised and able to manage a wide and varied range of tasks with competing priorities and deadlines.

Organisation Profile:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the only national organisation in Scotland working with frontline workers, managers and leaders supporting care experienced young people ensuring that they have the expertise and passion to help young people lead happy successful lives.

This is a key post within the organisation and is expected to ensure that the views of care experienced young people are heard and understood.

Main Functions of Role:

  • To recruit and work with a steering group of care experienced young people, those with lived experience, practitioners, managers and professionals who will co-design this work.
  • Support those young people with lived experience to ensure that they are able to participate fully in the work of the steering group.
  • Support the steering group to co-produce a toolkit of resources to aid understanding of trauma.
  • Support the roll out and development of the resource across our membership.
  • Support young people to fully participate in the development of a scoping paper, ensuring that their views are heard, given real weight and acted upon.
  • Design a robust evaluation tool to measure the ongoing impact and success of the project.
  • Ensure that the work of the project is fed into all Staf Managers’ Forums, Practitioners’ Gatherings, Focus Groups and Conferences.

Finance Officer

The Role:

Staf is looking for an experienced Finance Officer to join our Operations Team with responsibility for the smooth running of all Stafs financial processes and procedures. The key functions of the role will be around managing a number of funding streams, setting and monitoring budgets, supporting managers and the Board with accurate monthly reporting and ensuring that Staf meets its statutory and charity requirements.

The successful candidate:

You will have at least 2 years’ experience in managing the financial function of a small organisation. You will have a high level of proficiency in Sage Line 50 and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. You will have excellent attention to detail and will be able to work in a busy and dynamic environment, managing time and tasks effectively. Previous experience in the third sector is desirable, but not essential.

Main Functions of Role:

  • Ensuring that financial information is up to date and accurate, and processes and procedures are robust and effective.
  • Ensuring budgets are created and monitored, and provide accurate and relevant information to managers on budgets they control.
  • Ensure all day to day financial functions are working smoothly through monthly bank reconciliations, accurate processing and maintenance of financial records, payment in and out and liaising with payroll and pension providers.
  • Supporting management in grant fund applications and submission of ongoing reports.

Against this background of opportunity and change Staf is looking to appoint a Board Chair to play a pivotal role in a national organisation that will be at the heart of such changes.

The Scottish Throughcare and Aftercare Forum exists to improve the lives of young people with experience of living in care in Scotland. Established in 1998, we have a strong record of actively engaging with frontline workers and managers throughout the country, facilitating practice sharing, and influencing senior policy makers in national government. We do this to improve the services care leavers receive and to address the inequality of outcomes for them in education, health, employment, housing and justice.

After a period of successful growth, Staf is now embarking on its next 3 year strategy. With values of We Listen, We Love, We Care at its heart, our mission is to ensure that “the wellbeing and success of young people leaving care across Scotland is indistinguishable from that of their peers in the general population”.

We are looking or an experienced Chair who has worked at an executive level nationally within the care sector, including Scottish Government. Your primary roles will be to support the Chief Executive in implementing the organisation’s strategy, to create influence and ensure the Board is effective in setting and implementing Staf’s direction of travel.

But just as important is your passion and commitment to improving the lives of Scotland’s children and young people, and ensuring their hopes and ambitions are never held back because of their care experience.

This position is non-remunerative and asks for a commitment of approximately one and a half days per month and Chairing 4 Board meetings per year, as well as the AGM. There are also board development opportunities.

  • developing and maintaining relationships with senior stakeholders including our members, other national organisations, key funders, the Government, Opposition and other political parties, relevant government departments and associated agencies, other voluntary organisations and sponsors.
  • supporting the Board in the performance of its governance functions;
  • ensuring that the contribution of Board members, staff and volunteers is coordinated effectively so that Staf objectives, short term and long term, are achieved in a manner consistent with its statement of values.
