Scottish War Blinded provides free support and assistance to veterans of the armed forces who have a vision impairment. We support men and women who have lost their sight subsequently to their service, as well as those injured in a war.

Centre Officer

An opportunity has arisen for a Centre Officer to cover maternity leave, based in Paisley.

Our Hawkhead Centre is an activity hub which supports the independence of armed forces veterans with sight loss. We are looking for a Centre Officer who will enable members to maximise the benefit and enjoyment they gain from attending the Centre. They will be a key member of the staff team, assessing the needs of our members and developing ways to support their independence.

We aim to find someone with a variety of skills and abilities. You will be innovative and creative in approach and have interests you can share with our members, as well as a caring approach.

If you do not already have an SVQ3 in health and social care, we will expect you to be willing to work towards this qualification. You will have at least a year’s experience of working with older people, adults with a vision impairment or other disabilities, or service veterans. Above all you will be a team player with excellent communication skills.

Deputy Centre Manager (Hawkhead Centre)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a deputy to assist the manager in leading the Hawkhead Centre in Paisley.

The Hawkhead Centre provides a hub of activity and support for Armed Forces veterans with a sight impairment from across the West of Scotland.

The deputy manager will support the manager to continue to develop the service and lead a multi-disciplinary team of staff with the skills, knowledge and vision to empower Scottish War Blinded members to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

The successful candidate will have at least SVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent. He / she will have at least two years’ experience of working with either older people or adults with disabilities and of managing, supporting and supervising a staff team. They will also have considerable experience of outcome-focused assessment and the principles of person-centred support, and some knowledge of statutory and third sector provision for older people with a visual impairment.

The Hawkhead Centre is part of a Scotland-wide service to Scottish War Blinded members and the Deputy will be part of the Scottish War Blinded management team.

Outreach Worker (Maternity Cover)

An opportunity has arisen for an Outreach Worker to cover maternity leave, based in Glasgow.

The outreach worker will provide a person-centred, innovative service to veterans with a vision impairment. The staff work with members of Scottish War Blinded to identify and support their individual needs and so increase and maintain their independence and enhance their quality of life. The post will involve considerable travel in order to visit our members in their own homes.

Applicants should be qualified to SVQ level 3 or above in health, social care, community work or rehabilitation in vision impairment. They will have excellent communication skills, have at least one year’s recent experience of working with older people, adults with a vision impairment, those with other disabilities, or service veterans in the community, and be committed to empowering people with a vision impairment to have choice and control over their lives.
