Friends of the Earth Scotland is looking for an HR Manager to help manage our expanding team. This is a new post and you will support the Head of Operations and the Director, and provide advice and guidance to managers on best practice, organisational HR policies, terms and conditions of employment and employment law. You will attend the FoES Management Team meeting for HR related discussions.
The role involves union liaison and negotiation, obtaining legal advice from our retained lawyers, keeping up-to-date with all relevant HR related legal requirements, managing HR administration, revision of the staff handbook, co-ordinating recruitment processes and oversight of the training budget. You will also support staff to understand and exercise their rights and responsibilities. There are currently 20 staff, 6 of whom manage one or more people. You will help us to develop and implement anti-racism policies.
Friends of the Earth Scotland is looking for a new Climate Campaigner to work with our Climate & Energy Campaigner in this vitally important year of the UN climate talks (COP26) coming to Glasgow. This is a new key campaign role within Friends of the Earth Scotland to work on climate and energy policy and practice in Scotland, and to contribute to our work on Just Transition, the fossil fuel industry and the UN climate talks.
COP26 is a major opportunity to help strengthen the climate justice movement in Scotland and FoE’s central role in it. We will work in the run up, during and in the aftermath of the UN summit to strengthen the movement and use the COP as leverage for further climate action from the Scottish and UK Governments.
Managed by the Climate & Energy Campaigner, you will work closely with the Director, the Head of Campaigns and the wider team to help deliver our core Fossil Free Scotland campaign. A major part of your work will focus on the government and parliamentary processes of revising the Climate Change Plan and creating the new Scottish Energy Strategy, building on our successful campaigning to increase the ambition in the new Climate Change Act.
You will be a strong campaigner, with excellent communication skills, a good grip of technical issues and a good knowledge of climate and energy policy. You will have a naturally collaborative working style, and will thrive in a small, creative team. A good knowledge of the Scottish political context and of climate and energy policy would be a significant advantage.
You will work closely with the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition and other Scottish partners.
The UN climate talks (COP26) will take place in Glasgow from 9-20 November 2020. The UK COP26 Coalition is a broad UK-wide coalition through which civil society will plan together, share resources and learning, and organise a mass mobilisation and Peoples' counter-summit during the talks. It aims to support the transformation of the climate movement in the UK, to a stronger, more climate-justice centred movement long after COP26 is over.
We are recruiting two Co-Cordinators, one based in Glasgow, one based in London to coordinate a broad, diverse and inclusive coalition of civil society groups, working in a flexible and open way that allows for different levels of access and involvement, engaging established and new actors across the breadth of sectoral, thematic and regional spaces.
The successful applicants will need to be excellent networkers, highly organised, skilled in facilitation and communication with a wide range of audiences, have a strong track record of working with marginalised groups and an understanding of the wider political context around the climate summit.
We would particularly like to encourage applications from people of colour / black or brown people and people most impacted by climate change or impacted by other kinds of environmental, social, and economic injustice who are currently under-represented in the climate and environmental movements in the UK.
This is one of two Coalition Coordinator posts being recruited at the same time. The other post will be based in London. Expectation of strong coordination and collaboration between two posts
We are open to secondments.
Reporting to: Head of Campaigns, Friends of the Earth Scotland on behalf of the UK COP26 Coalition.
