Charity registered in Scotland SC037980
The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust was founded partly to help protect and expand Scotland’s unique musical heritage, but also to give young people opportunities to develop a unique set of skills that stay with them for life. The charity helps state schools, especially those in remote and deprived areas, to provide piping and drumming tuition and we encourage the development of youth pipe bands. Playing in a pipe band helps young people to develop resilience, camaraderie, teamwork, perseverance and other important attributes for life, learning and work. Playing an instrument is also proven to improve educational attainment in numeracy and literacy.
We currently work in 23 out of 32 Local Education Authority areas in Scotland, supporting over 3,500 pupils to learn the pipes and drums with our partners which include Local Education Authorities, schools, voluntary organisations, co-funders and pipe bands.
SSPDT awards grants, runs a national bagpipe lending scheme and organises the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships. We provide paid internships in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and support professional development for tutors.
There are many more young people in Scotland who would like to learn the pipes and drums and the Trust plans to extend support to more schools especially those in remote and deprived areas. This is an exciting time to be joining this innovative Trust. You can make a contribution to Scotland’s musical heritage and future, and you will have a lasting positive impact on the lives of many young people.
