Edinburgh Young Persons’ Service comprises two elements – a visiting housing support service and a supported accommodation service (Positive Transitions Project). Both services adopt a psychologically informed approach to support and work in partnership with a wide range of statutory and voluntary sector agencies to ensure that the needs of individual service users are fully met.
Both elements of the service were awarded 6 (excellent) in our two most recent inspections by the Care Inspectorate (2016, 2018).
Visiting Housing Support
The housing support service delivers visiting support to vulnerable young people between 16 and 25 across Edinburgh. The service provided is person centred, flexible and responsive to the changing needs of the individual service user. Support is provided to access, establish and maintain an appropriate tenancy and can be practical, social or emotional in nature. Once a tenancy is established, support is provided to develop & strengthen social and family networks, including identifying and accessing appropriate education/training or employment.
The service works with between 200 and 250 young people each year, with a particular focus on those in temporary accommodation. Support is tailored to meet the needs of individual service users in terms of frequency and content.
Positive Transitions Project
This project is funded by the Big Lottery and is a supported accommodation project for young people with a background of local authority care. Based on a core and cluster model, it consists of 10 self-contained flats, all located in close proximity to a central hub which is staffed flexibly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It aims to provide a stepping stone from local authority care to independent living by providing intensive support to enable young people to develop the skills needed to successfully maintain their tenancies.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Support Worker to join our established team and be part of a new city-wide visiting support service for young people, delivered in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council.
The service will work with young people between 16 and 25 who are at risk of becoming homeless, who are homeless or who have recently experienced homelessness to enable them to move to or to keep settled accommodation, develop independent living skills and to engage with employability services. Support will be delivered to young people in a range of accommodation tenures, with a particular focus on working with those in temporary accommodation.
Core hours of support will be Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.00pm but flexible working will be required. You will participate in a telephone on-call service which will operate on a rotational basis to ensure that young people have access to support 24 hours a day.
As a senior practitioner, you will work with a range of service user groups with complex and varied key-working issues. You will co-ordinate complex support arrangements and support the leadership of the service. You will have line management responsibility for a number of support workers to whom you will provide regular support and supervision. You will also be responsible for completing the performance management review process with all the support workers you line manage.
You will have full knowledge of multi-agency working, housing support / care at home systems and extensive knowledge of diversity of service user groups which you will use to establish and maintain respectful and empowering relationships with service users so that they feel valued and supported and in control of their own lives. You will be responsible for carrying out assessments of new service users and for reviewing existing service users on a regular basis.
You will need to develop effective relationships with service users supporting them to cope with their lives in a positive and independent way so that they can make informed choices and take responsibility for their actions.
A significant part of the role involves using technology to help deliver the best service we can to the people we support. You will embrace technology by using LinkLiving's IT equipment to help drive efficiency and provide a quality assured service. You will be given a Google Chrome Book and SmartPhone to access our integrated care system (Carista) to create support plans and risk assessments, record support, monitor outcomes and gain feedback from service users.

- Meet the requirements of registration with Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme check
- Flexible, practical and reliable approach
