Do you have what it takes to operate as a strategic leader in a complex high profile organisation? And a genuine desire to play your part in addressing a social cause that affects thousands of people and families? Then join us as Director, Shelter Scotland and you could soon be the driving force behind our continued journey aimed at tackling Scotland’s housing emergency.

Shelter Scotland has been the key voice in getting social house building back to the top of the political agenda. As well as persuading the Scottish Government to take action against the Bedroom Tax, we’ve campaigned successfully for a major reform of the Private Rented Sector too. We’re now entering the crucial implementation phase of an ambitious three year strategy that’s set clear and bold goals to be achieved in a complex and turbulent environment. This career-defining opportunity will see you help us make a major impact for social justice with individuals, within communities, and across Scotland.

About the role

You’ll regularly liaise with other Executive Leadership team members to ensure Shelter’s strategy is implemented in Scotland in a way that takes account of the national legislative, policy and societal context. You’ll also be instrumental in helping to model the behaviours needed to achieve our strategy, and encourage others to do the same. Acting as our key national spokesperson in the media, with government ministers, senior civil servants, funders etc., you’ll also have a telling input into our campaigning, fundraising and media activities and help ensure the long-term financial sustainability of Shelter Scotland and Shelter as a whole.

About you

Someone who can bring leadership, partnership, innovation and a real passion for the cause, you are comfortable both dealing with change, and bringing it about. You also have the communication skills to represent us in the media and liaise with a wide range of key stakeholders. A proven ability to oversee the strategic development of effective, high quality, innovative services that make a real difference to clients is important too, as is the confidence to act as an advocate within high-level networks and proactively identify fundraising opportunities.

Safeguarding is everyone’s business. Shelter is committed to protecting the health, wellbeing and human rights of those we support, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. All our staff will be expected to observe professional standards of behaviour and conduct their work in line with our Safeguarding Policies.

At Shelter Scotland, we welcome and encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, disability, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. We also encourage applications from people, who have been homeless or have been at risk of homelessness. We are facing diverse problems, so need diverse people to tackle them.
