Purpose of the role:

This new role will be part of the Operations and Development team and will be line managed by the Development and Engagement Manager (post currently being recruited).

You will join an ambitious and supportive organisation. We have a track record of funding success and existing relationships with Scottish Government Funds and Charitable Trusts and Foundations. We have a fundraising strategy in place and a management team and board who all recognise the importance of developing a fundraising culture throughout our organisation.

The Fundraising Manager will manage Clan Childlaw’s existing pipeline of Trusts and Grants, ensuring proposals, applications and impact reports are completed and relationships are developed. The post holder will also be responsible for identifying new opportunities to grow the pipeline by researching and identifying new prospects.

Person Specification:

Ideally you will have experience of writing compelling funding proposals and managing relationships to secure five-six figure grants and philanthropic gifts. However, while knowledge and experience of fundraising is desirable, we are happy to consider candidates who can bring relevant transferable skills from other sectors such as sales, marketing and business development. Training and Membership Co-ordinator

An exciting opportunity has arisen in a new role working to develop, support, and facilitate Clan Childlaw’s training programme and membership offer.

Clan lawyers design and deliver training to a variety of audiences including frontline practitioners and professionals whose work supports children and young people, and legal professionals. The postholder will coordinate the delivery of Clan Childlaw’s training programmes to ensure a high standard of delivery, evaluating success and contributing to the ongoing development and continuous improvement of our training programme.

This role will also support the launch and delivery of our new Lawyers for Children membership network, a high-profile training programme offering essential skills for legal professionals representing children and young people. The postholder will coordinate enquiries and onboard new members, monitor activity of the network and identify areas for improvement and development. They will work closely with the Communications Manager and the Development and Engagement Manager to coordinate marketing and communications to help build and establish the network and to identify new audiences to support its continued growth.

Engaging with a variety of stakeholders is a key part of the role including liaising across Clan Childlaw teams and connecting with external networks to support and promote our training. Clan Childlaw has several projects that have a focus on specific areas of law, that work to advance child-centred practice and through providing legal help, alleviate issues affecting the life chances of children and young people. Our projects include Street Legal and the Scottish Care Leavers Housing Advice Service which provide legal advice and representation to young people affected by homelessness; Care Leavers Law Service, Children’s Advocacy in Children’s Hearings Legal Support Service, Covid-19 Response Project, Child lawyering specialism, and Child Law Networks.

The projects are funded by various funding bodies, and each has specific aims & objectives and outcomes to achieve.

Street Legal

We have funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to use the law to help young people and families with children affected by homelessness in Edinburgh to realise their rights to housing and support, and to challenge decision makers when they do not meet their legal duty towards young people and families. Street Legal works in partnership with Shelter Scottish Housing Law Service to provide legal advice and representation to young people aged up to 25 years and families with children under the age of 18 years who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Scottish Care Leavers Housing Advice Service

We have recently been awarded funding from the Scottish Government Third Sector Homelessness Fund to support a new project enabling us to expand our existing housing law and care leavers’ rights work.

The project will provide our innovative person-centred legal outreach service to care experienced young people, including those preparing to leave care, who are aged up to 25, and who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness through living in temporary, unstable, or unsuitable accommodation after care. We will work to reduce the risk and incidence of homelessness amongst this group of young people by using our crossover expertise in housing law and care leavers rights to provide holistic legal interventions.

Through both projects we also provide training, second-tier advice, and our innovative supported advocacy model, enabling services that support young people affected by homelessness and those with experience of care, to advocate on their behalf to prevent homelessness, and permanently increase third-sector capacity to prevent youth homelessness.

Children’s Advocacy in Children’s Hearings - Legal Support Service

Clan Childlaw operate a legal information helpline for any child, young person, carer or professional to obtain legal information relating to a range of child law issues. We have been awarded funding by the Scottish Government to create a legal support service building on the strengths of our existing legal information helpline model, to provide legal support to independent advocacy workers who are providing advocacy to children and young people at children’s hearings as part of the national practice model.

Strengthening the Legal and Children’s Sector in Scotland

We have been awarded funding by The Legal Education Foundation to help address gaps in knowledge of lawyers and children’s organisations in relation to providing specialist, child-centred legal help to children and young people in Scotland. Our aims are to improve practice, increase access to justice, build capacity, share learning across the UK and create career pathways to develop social welfare lawyers.

Child Law Network UK

Funded by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Clan Childlaw jointly lead to convene and facilitate a UK-wide practitioner led child law network, with emphasis on sharing expertise, building a peer support network, expanding the reach of good practice, and sharing learning on the practice of representing children.

Clan Childlaw is an award winning law centre, delivering legal advice and representation for children and young people in central Scotland. It provides information and guidance about children's rights and the law to children and young people, carers, and professionals.

Clan is directed by a Board which meets every 3 months. The Board aims to offer experience to Clan in law, the public and children’s sector, access to justice, accountancy and communications.

The Board is seeking to recruit 2 new members. This is a chance to join a group of committed and welcoming individuals and to work alongside a successful and ambitious law centre to help further its aims.
